Outwood Grange Academy

The project at Outwood Grange Academy in Easingwold consisted of the demolition of the existing sports hall and construction of a new 12,626 sq ft sports hall to provide students with high-quality sporting facilities.

The building's substructure consisted of piled foundations with associated bases and strip footings and the superstructure comprised steel frame which was then erected to form the framework for the building, finished with a brickwork skin to half height coupled with cladding to eaves level and a composite panel pitched roof.

Internally, all walls were built with blockwork to form the new sports hall, with associated ground floor changing rooms, toilets, staff rooms and storage areas. A mezzanine floor was formed over the changing areas and was split into a plant room, gym, offices and a classroom. All areas were fully fitted-out by Tolent including all complete mechanical and electrical installation, delivering a turn-key solution.

Externally, new footpaths were formed together with hard and soft landscaping, a new drainage system was installed, new services were brought into the building and fencing was installed.

The main challenge on this project was that the works were carried out in a live school environment, which meant access to the site was restricted and there were distribution challenges. Access for material deliveries had to be carefully coordinated daily, with smaller more frequent deliveries scheduled to ensure minimal disruption to the live school campus.

To ensure we coordinated our works around the stringent access, phasing and segregation required regular meetings with the school liaison officer and in the run-up to more disruptive works, we liaised daily with the school liaison officer to ensure minimal disruption. A traffic management plan was in place throughout the works which changed regularly to accommodate changes in the programme and campus activities. Within our traffic management plan, there was a holding area for deliveries and all deliveries were guided by our banksman. No deliveries were made between 8am - 9am and between 2:15pm and 3:15pm so that we did not cause congestion during school drop-offs and pickups.

We are proud that we are bringing excellent facilities to the community and for the use of those within the community. The sports hall will be vital to improving grassroots sport in the area by allowing local people to play a variety of sports in a safe environment in facilities that are fit for purpose.
