Located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle City Library serves the region as the biggest public library between Leeds and Edinburgh. Newcastle City Library formed part of the £40m Newcastle Libraries Private Finance Initiative (PFI); one of the largest library PFI projects undertaken in the UK.
Works consisted of the demolition of the existing library and design and build of a BREEAM ‘Very Good’, six storey public building. The library has since become a civic landmark and a community meeting place, accommodating a range of facilities, including a cafe, crèche as well as an abundance of public meeting, performance and exhibition spaces. The full fit-out of the library provided a turn-key solution for the client.
With the use of contemporary building materials and careful planning, the overall design, featuring a mainly transparent building, is clean and modern; whilst the library still asserts its civic stature and cultural context. The result was a doubling in visitors and a library that has been awarded both the Public Library Building Award and the Newcastle City Council Lord Mayors Design Award.
