Redcar and Cleveland Council

Tolent's ECO Village development comprised 15 new build properties and 11 refurbished existing terrace dwellings, all of which were properties developed to the highest standards of sustainability.

The project has set the tone for sustainable housing redevelopment in the area while also acting as a catalyst for transformational change. In 2013 the development was named in the Top 50 Affordable Housing Developments by Inside Housing Magazine.

Our commitment to low carbon construction meant Code of Sustainable Homes Level 4 was achieved on all properties, with four properties receiving the maximum Code of Sustainable Homes Level 6 standard.

These high standards of energy efficiency were achieved through the installation of photo-voltaic panels, additional insulation and increased air tightness among a number of other measures. As a result, residents can expect to save up to £1,000 a year on energy bills, compared to those in traditional properties.

The homes were the first of their kind in the area to emit no carbon dioxide, illustrating our dedication to sustainability and innovation in building design.

Local schools were engaged throughout the project through a range of activities.  We delivered environmental and health & safety workshops to pupils at Southbank Community Primary School, as well as organising site visits for pupils.

"These 26 homes, whether newly-built or refurbished, provide an example of what can be achieved by strong local partnerships and are a tribute to all the efforts of the community partnership, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Gentoo”
