The project at Benfield Park Diagnostic Centre consisted of the construction of a 12,600 sq ft two-storey health facility together with a single storey pharmacy on the previous grounds of the Walkergate Hospital site.
The healthcare facility comprised: 12 consulting rooms; 3 treatment rooms; a radiotherapy room; an ultrasound room; changing and welfare facilities; group therapy rooms; offices and staff facilities as well as a reception and waiting area. Together, these buildings provided a number of hospital clinics, GP services, a retail community pharmacy service and a café service for patients and visitors, all under one roof.
The facilities created allow services such as radiology, paediatric clinics and musculo skeletal clinics as well as audiology assessments. In addition to these facilities, the centre also accommodated the Care Closer to Home scheme, pioneered by Macmillan Cancer Support, Newcastle Hospitals and the NHS Foundation Trust, which allows patients to choose to continue their chemotherapy care in a venue closer to their home.
A Category B fit out brought the centre to life as Tolent worked closely with the client and their requirement to meet Health Technical Memorandum standards to transform the building’s shell, which included: plasterboard partitions and wall linings; under floor heating; lift installation; internal time doors; frame and architraves; decorating and finishing in addition to the installation of furniture, blinds and curtain rails.
The project achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating with an overall score of 71%, with 100% achieved in the waste category and 80% achieved in the land use and ecology category.
