Overview

The Apollo Works is a modern and stylish, purpose-built student accommodation building, located on Alma Street, just a short walk from the main Coventry University campus and city centre. 

The accommodation included WiFi, kitchen equipment and top 10 Sky TV Channels as standard and the communal facilities boast a spacious common room with a large TV and pool table, laundry room and outdoor garden spaces.

The project comprised the design and construction of 407nr apartments, typically arranged in groups of four and five bedrooms, coupled with shared kitchen and living room, as well as a number of self-contained studios. All rooms are fully serviced including data and broadband connections with heating provided by electric panel heaters and hot water through a CHP boiler plant. The building achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard.

The building provided a continuous frontage along Alma Street. Initial buildings are 3 storey then progressing through 4 storey to 5 storeys at the corner where Alma Street meets Hood Street. The layout of the buildings was designed to ensure that the privacy of adjoining residents is protected. A single vehicular access into the development was created with four parking spaces, next to the management office.

The foundations of the building were vibro piled with strip footings. The building was of traditional construction and load bearing masonry envelope and precast concrete floor slabs.

Part of the ground floor was constructed of a steel frame to provide wider spans for the larger, open plan communal areas. A mix of brick and render forms, the predominant external materials reflected the dominant materials mix in the area and complemented the building’s neighbouring context. The elevations are interspersed with storey-height powder-coated windows and metal panels.

Three rear wings, perpendicular to Alma Street, resulted in the creation of a series of rear courtyards that provided communal amenity space for the students.

 

The project comprised the design and construction of 407 high specification student apartments in Coventry.

 

This is another fine example of Tolent’s ability to deliver high-standard turn-key student accommodation on time to a challenging programme on a restricted site; whilst offering an on-site sales presence to support sales and marketing activities.
