Completed in 2013, Tolent delivered the design and build of The Wigan Youth Zone one of a new generation of flagship facilities located on prominent town centre sites providing state of the art sports and recreational facilities to Sport England and professional standards.
The building incorporated a range of facilities including four MUGA (multi-use game areas), outdoor pitches, sports hall, gym, boxing gym, dance studio, music room, arts and recreational space, kitchen, café and administration offices. The overall building occupies 3340 sq m with a further 2,500 sq m of external areas that include a skate park and MUGAs.
In addition, the building houses facilities for careers advice and counselling, including peer-to-peer help and support, as part of the ambition to help young people realise their true potential.
Designed to respond to its setting, the three-storey sports hall was situated next to the adjacent three-storey former council offices and the two-storey arts, recreational and administration block situated beside the neighbouring two-storey art gallery.
Each block was connected by a fully glazed internal street, which provided a visual link from the building to the open space of the outdoor pitches and Public Park beyond and acted as a beacon at night, illuminating with LED colour-changing lights. To ensure the integrity of the two main blocks, brickwork and glass architecture was retained throughout the internal street area. Completed on time, within budget and to a high standard the facility was opened in August 2013.
