Kirklees Council tenants have moved into new social housing in Batley

Brand new homes in Batley mark the first social housing scheme completed since housing services came back into the council and the first housing scheme completed by Tolent in Yorkshire.

A former garage site at Corfe Close, just off Windmill Lane in Batley, has been transformed into seven two-bed properties providing much-needed homes for Kirklees families.

Construction began last year as part of additional investment in North Kirklees.

Karl Hetherington, regional manager at Tolent, said: “We are delighted to have handed over this project, marking our first completed housing scheme in Yorkshire.

“This partnership has demonstrated our ability to deliver first class construction projects and our commitment to the communities we work in through our varied education and employment opportunities.

“A huge thanks to everyone for making this scheme a success which is another step in building our reputation as the contractor of choice for housing across the wider Yorkshire region."

Kirklees Council worked with Tolent to deliver this housing scheme, which created two apprenticeship opportunities for local people.

The project also helped council third-year apprentices Johnny Pellowe-Bailey, John Culpan and Ciaran Brook, who required evidence for their college portfolios of fitting a trussed roof.

A great collaboration between council and contractor that gave the apprentices experience and valuable evidence for their portfolios.

Councillor Cathy Scott, Cabinet Member for Housing and Democracy, said: “I’m proud that we’ve delivered the first of many social housing developments since we brought housing services back into the council.

“The partnership working demonstrated throughout the project proves vital in creating opportunities for the people of Kirklees.

“It was great revisiting the site a year on and I’m pleased that tenants will moved in before the holidays.”

Jamie Day, recently moved-in tenant, said: “Before moving in, my young son and I were temporarily living in a hotel room. Now we’ve moved into our new home, we’ve gone from staying somewhere where I didn’t know anyone, to living in a beautiful home with so much space. We’re so much happier here, and we're settled just in time for Christmas.”

In early 2023, Tolent will complete seven additional social homes at Howley Walk.
