Stobo Castle, Scotland
Project Details
Tolent commenced work in 2002, on the first of four phases:
The first phase and largest was to provide an extension to the Castle to house the new 25m swimming pool, treatment rooms, gym, hydrotherapy areas. The scheme took 52 weeks to complete. The Castle remained open and fully operational throughout the works and it is testament to the planning and co-ordination of the project team that not one complaint was received from a guest during this time about the building works.
Following completion of the extension, Phase 2 looked to refurbish the areas within the castle that were now no longer in use. Former treatment rooms were converted into luxury bedrooms whilst the former hair salon was turned in to a shop and the former shop into a juice bar. All of this work was carried out on nightshift as the areas around these rooms were in use during the day for Spa visitors.
Phase 3 once again saw an area deep within the Castle remodelled. The former 10m swimming pool area was no longer required as the Phase 1 extension housed a new 25m pool. The area was totally gutted, the pool removed and infilled. This created an empty shell from which the Cashmere Suite could be created, the Castles most special area, with a bedroom, dressing room, sitting room, bath room and shower rooms. It is the ultimate in luxury. The centre piece of the suite is a 1 tonne limestone bath carved from a single piece of Turkish limestone. Access and restrictive working made this the most challenging of all phases at Stobo but once again not one complaint was received and the Castle remained fully operational throughout.
The final phase, was the creation of Castle Lodge. A building set away from the main castle building which was converted from the former staff residential quarters into luxury guest bedrooms. Drainage proved to be the biggest challenge for this Phase requiring the installation of a state of the art Sewage Treatment plant to cope with the increased load and to ensure that only clean water was discharged in to the River Tweed, one of the worlds greatest fishing rivers.
