The Wigan Youth Zone is a multi use building that includes the following facilities: Reception, Administration Areas, Sports Hall, Climbing Wall, Dance/Performing Arts Studio; Fitness Suite; Boxing Gym & Ring, Changing Rooms; Arts/Activity Areas, Sensory Suite, Conference Room; Café Area; TV Lounge; Kitchen and Toilet areas.
The external areas boast four number MUGA (multi-use sports pitches) with associated seating, fencing, lighting and drainage; hard standings to pedestrian paved areas.
The facilities have close links with Wigan Football Club and boast David Whelan the Wigan Chairman as one of its patrons.
Wigan Youth Zone is one of a new generation of flagship facilities located on prominent town centre sites. It provides state of the art sports and recreational facilities to Sport England and professional standards.
The accommodation includes four 3G outdoor pitches, sports hall, gym, boxing gym, dance studio, music room, arts and recreational space, kitchen, café and administration offices. Careers advice and counselling, including peer-to-peer help and support, are available as part of the ambition to help young people realise their true potential.
The overall building occupies 3340 sq m with a further 2,500 sq m of external areas that include a skate park and MUGA’s.
Having been completed on time, within budget and to a high standard Prime Minster David Cameron officially opened the Youth Zone on Thursday 8 August 2013, describing it as one of his ‘proudest days as Prime Minister’.
