Cuthbert House
Project Details
Gentoo Construction was appointed to build the highly-specialised office block to accommodate the HQ base for the Anglican Diocese of Durham. The ‘brown-field’ site was formerly a local dairy factory which stood empty since 2006.
The two-storey multi-purpose building incorporates teaching, library, meeting, prayer and administrative facilities. Located in Stonebridge, Durham, the building incorporates several symbolic features, including:
Footprint in the shape of a bishop’s mitre;
Three-sided building representing the Holy Trinity;
“open arms” entrance with curved automatic draws;
Circular prayer room representing eternal life, which is 33m2 – the same age as Christ when he was crucified.
The development has been awarded the 2015 Architectural Award by The City of Durham Trust..
